05.11.2026 09:45 AMUS equity markets rallied sharply on the Democrats' midterm win. AI trading had been sucking up all the oxygen in financial markets, but a rotation into other names helped most S&P 500 sectors jump by 2% or more. The Dow Jones posted its best day since April 2025, when President Trump signaled tariffs would be less severe than initially feared.
The pain fell on hyperscalers and chip makers. NVIDIA and other semiconductor stocks came under pressure amid fears that limits on data-center construction and commissioning will crimp demand. By contrast, mega caps such as Apple, Meta, and Alphabet rose on hopes that constrained chip supply will bolster the value of their services.
Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and sector dynamics
Hyperscalers face a difficult outlook. They have amassed huge amounts of debt, and restrictions on data-center projects would make it harder to service that borrowing. That raises questions about banks and chip vendors tied to these builds. Corporate profits could decline, and combined with high borrowing costs and slowing growth, this would increase the risk of a broader S&P 500 correction.
History offers mixed comfort. While the broad market has typically closed higher 12 months after midterms, the power split inside government matters. Carson Investment Research shows that when a Republican is in the White House and Democrats control Congress, the S&P 500 gained about 4.9% on average in the year following midterms since 1950. When the Congress is divided, that average rose to 14%.
One-year post-midterm S&P 500 dynamics
Markets tend to react first and analyze later. The rally got a leg up from Trump's comments that he would work with Democrats. However, bear in mind that the president can veto bills he dislikes, including potential AI regulations.
AI trade dynamics will hinge on how the new authorities handle data centers. Pennsylvania provides an example of a pragmatic approach, permitting data-center builds in close coordination with local communities and conditional on stable electricity pricing. That model could be a template for balancing community concerns and industry needs.
The S&P 500 also got a lift from the plunge in oil prices and the associated drop in Treasury yields, which eases monetary policy pressure.
Technically, the daily chart indicates that the S&P 500 has returned to fair value. Traders should focus on a break of the 7,650–7,720 range to confirm direction.
